WAIPAHU, Hawaii—Starting pitcher Bryson Kenolio (SO, Southern Utah University) allowed three runs on eight hits and two walks over eight innings to lead the Kamuela Paniolos to a 5-3 victory over the Oahu Paddlers on Tuesday afternoon. Both of the Paddlers’ playoff wins came in come-from-behind fashion, but the Paniolos limited Oahu to one run in the bottom of the ninth to reach the final day of the HCBL playoffs.
The Paniolos scored three runs in the top of the third on an RBI single from first baseman Chad Bolibol (SO, Hawaii Pacific University) and a two-run single from designated hitter Matthew Daugherty (JR, California Baptist University). Daugherty also played a big role defensively for the Paniolos coming in as a pitcher to close out the ball game.
Paddlers starting pitcher John Livingston (SO, Northwestern University) tossed a perfect fourth and left fielder Forrest Brandt (SO, Davidson College) made a couple of shoestring catches in the fifth to limit the Paniolos to one hit over the next two innings. Livingston ran into a bit of trouble in the sixth allowing back-to-back singles to Bolibol and third baseman Jake Middleton (RS FR, UC Riverside) who came around to score on an RBI single from catcher Tom Hougland (SO, University of Kansas) and a sac fly from left fielder Jordan Yallen (RS SO, Oxnard College).
Continuing their habit of scoring late, the Paddlers jumped on the board in the bottom of the sixth. Second baseman Ka’iana Eldredge (SO, University of Kansas) led off the inning with a double to left. The next batter, shortstop Jimmy Filter (SR, Northeastern University), hit a line drive to left but was robbed of hit as Yallen made a wonderful catch on the warning track. The next batter grounded out to short. The Paddlers then strung together three consecutive two-out hits including an RBI single from catcher Buddy Traxler (SO, Concordia University) before Kenolio was able to force another lineout to left to end the inning.
Down 5-2 in the bottom of the ninth, the Paddlers attempted to rally starting off the inning with three consecutive singles. However, they were only able to plate one run as center fielder Brett Tiagwad (SR, St. Joseph’s University) reached on a fielder’s choice before Daugherty induced a double-play to end the ballgame and ensure the Paniolos play tomorrow in the final day of the HCBL playoffs.
